Thanks A-List, I Am Now Pyjama Obsessed

And since its still winter in the Southern Hemisphere, is there anything you'd like to be wearing more than your jim-jams? Nope, me neither.

Gwyneth Paltrow was never a slow-burn obsession for me, until she started Goop. Goop - I blame professional research, thanks to Women’s Health, Grazia et al - kept me wildly entertaining in an “oh no she fecking didn’t” kinda way. And I’m still doing that. Only now I really am ready to become My Full Gwyneth, because she’s mildly less “This Candle Smells Like My Vagina” Gwyneth and more “Have You Seen My Diamond Pinkie Ring” Gwyneth. Perhaps her punks told her they didn’t want to hear about her vagina. I know mine DEFS would have. Anyhoo, Gwyn hosted a party last week to launch her Goop Sleep Milk. In her pyjamas. Yes, that silky sunshine yellow three-piece are her pjs. She sleeps in those. And then all I wanted to do was host parties in my pyjamas.

Until along came Angelina…

Angelina caught a flight in hers. She wore this silky grandpa set to the airport. And now I want to host parties and catch flights in my pyjamas. Because I’m thinking in this brave new post-Covid world that I could totally get away with this - just add jewellery, a chunky sandal and a blow dry and you’re good to go… In a louche 70s poolside kinda way, non?

But wait, what about the pinkie ring situation?

Its not just about the jim-jams, its also about the gold jewellery to elevate the lewk. Gwyn sports the bangles and the paperclip necklace, but also the signet ring. Signet rings and diamond pinkie rings are about the hottest things to beset a finger since Pamela Anderson had barbed wire tattooed on hers. They’re classic, weighty, old school and span from aristocrats to hip hop. Plus (is this why I like them?) the new trend subverts the signets's traditional masculine past. My personal obsession is with these hand-painted, diamond-studded pieces from Cece Jewellery @cecefhjewellery but since she’s a leeeetle far away from me, I’m eying up the local beauties.

Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen… This was an absolute joy to read! Ava and Winnie are old college roommates who serendipitously bump into each other after years apart just when the one really needs the other. Ava is now a stay-at-home mom, raising a fractious toddler in a tenser-by-the-minute marriage. Winnie is wealthy, charming and a leeeetle bit shady on the business end. Turns out she facilitates a counterfeit operation in luxury handbags between China and the US. Ava is at first appalled. And then intrigued. And then dragged in deep.

It’s such a fabulous read, not just because it’s liberally littered with designer bag references and the snobbery around luxury fashion but also because Ava and Winnie are both great characters. Plus it cleverly dives into minority groups’ take on the American dream and our collective obsession with outwardly ticking the boxes of everything from right school to right bag. Loved it, loved the con, loved the twist!

One last thing…

While we swing back to the subject of signet rings and my latest obsession… “Signet rings – jewellery that was created with a back to front crest – were used to stamp and sign documents, and they go as far back as the 4th century BC in Ancient Egypt.” That’s the word from a jewellery historian, but this quote is really just an excuse to show off another Cece Jewellery piece....
